Belleville · The harmonic skeleton
Teaching guidance
Start with the simplest harmonic movement in Belleville.
We’ll move the song to C major and practice just four chords: C, Am, Dm and G7.
🎯 Goal: Play the basic I–vi–ii–V and I–V movements in C major at 80 BPM, first with one chord per bar and then with two chords per bar.
💡 Before you play: Get comfortable with the four chords C, Am, Dm and G7 before you start. Keep your hand relaxed and listen for a steady pulse at 80 BPM. The first part gives you a full bar for each chord, so there’s no need to rush.
✓ Tips: Keep the beat steady even if a chord change isn’t perfect.
Look ahead to the next chord before you need to play it.
In the faster section, think in pairs: C–Am | Dm–G7.
Try Roman or Numbers view and notice that the pattern stays I–vi–ii–V.
Use the rest bars to relax your hand instead of preparing too early.
