Troublant Boléro

Troublant Boléro is an original composition by Django Reinhardt dating from 1948, with lyrics by French lyricist Jacques Larue. The piece was genuinely published as a boléro and provides a fascinating example of Django's interest in rhythms and musical colours extending far beyond conventional American swing.

Django Reinhardt recorded Troublant Boléro several times. The earliest known version comes from a December 1948 concert in Brussels with clarinetist Hubert Rostaing. Around January–February 1949 Django recorded it again in Rome with Stéphane Grappelli, and he returned to the composition once more in Paris on 30 January 1952, this time playing electric guitar with a more modern jazz ensemble.

Musical character:
Troublant Boléro combines the characteristic pulse of the bolero with Django's harmonic language and jazz improvisation. The first recording with Hubert Rostaing retains a particularly Hispanic flavour through its rhythm and melodic ornamentation, while later versions move progressively toward a more modern jazz approach. The result is music that feels exotic, elegant and unmistakably personal.
