Mabel

Mabel is an original composition by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, written during the classic period of the Quintette du Hot Club de France. The title was not chosen at random: the piece was dedicated to the celebrated cabaret singer Mabel Mercer, whom Django and Grappelli knew from the lively Paris nightlife of the 1930s.

Django Reinhardt first recorded Mabel on 14 December 1937 in Paris, and two takes from the session survive. He returned to the composition on 13 December 1940, recording a very different version with clarinet and a post-war-transition Hot Club sound rather than the classic violin-led setting.

Musical character:
Mabel is a bright, elegant swing with a graceful melody, lively harmonic movement, and plenty of room for melodic improvisation. Its sophisticated but playful character reflects the atmosphere of Parisian jazz clubs where swing, cabaret, American popular songs, and the emerging Hot Club style constantly crossed paths.

Connection to Manouche Jazz:
The connection is completely direct: Mabel was composed by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli at the height of their early partnership. At the same time, the story behind the title gives the piece a wider connection to the international cabaret and jazz scene of pre-war Paris. Grappelli regularly accompanied Mabel Mercer on piano, while Django and the Quintette belonged to the same musical nightlife surrounding clubs in Pigalle.
